Treating Periodontal Disease

There is no cure for periodontal disease, be we can control it.  But treatment will be successful only if two people are involved - you and the periodontal therapist!  Nothing we do will be successful unless you remove the accumulated bacteria (plaque) every day.

In our office, we always use non-surgical therapy to start the treatment of your gums and eliminate the bacteria that have grown in the pockets around your teeth.  We will perform this procedure several times, at two to three week intervals, to promote pocket shrinkage and healing of the tissues.  This is not a routine cleaning - it goes much deeper.  You may experience a little tenderness around your gums after treatment, but some aspirin or Tylenol should relieve any discomfort.

We’ll also give you detailed instructions and recommendations on how to care for your teeth and gums at home to make sure that you remove any new bacteria (plaque) on a daily basis. Remember, your cooperation in following through with these instructions will play a critical role in ensuring the success of your treatment.

In cases of advanced periodontal disease, a surgical approach is needed.  Though surgery is an advanced procedure, it can be used to help repair and regenerate destruction of gum tissues.
